“Azov” – No Glory Without a Fight

The Azov International Battalion was formed as part of the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. Azov welcomes foreign volunteers to join its ranks.

Azov's military system is built on advanced NATO standards in command and staff organization, operational planning, and combat operations. Its basic combat training course is a proprietary program, refined over the years through both combat experience and continuous development. It combines theoretical and practical instruction with physical and psychological training. The course is conducted by experienced Azov instructors with extensive combat experience. Azov's commanders and fighters continuously improve the training system and adapt it to the evolving realities of modern warfare. Even today, amid intense combat operations, all officers and non-commissioned officers of the brigade regularly undergo advanced professional training.

Azov is a legendary unit. Its history began in the spring of 2014, when russia launched its hybrid aggression against Ukraine. Armed groups of russian-backed militants entered Ukrainian territory. In response, patriotic young Ukrainians united to resist them and formed a volunteer detachment, which in May became the Azov Special Forces Battalion under the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The unit's fighters immediately joined the fight against russian proxy forces. In June, Azov played a key role in the liberation of the city of Mariupol. During the summer, the battalion distinguished itself in numerous battles, and by autumn it had been expanded into a Special Forces Regiment and incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine. Artillery and tank units were added to its structure.

In February 2015, the regiment successfully carried out an offensive operation during which its fighters liberated five settlements from russian proxy forces. Between 2015 and 2018, Azov continued to expand, strengthen its ranks, and improve its training system. Its commanders and fighters developed the unit on the basis of modern military doctrine and their own combat experience. Their initiative and dedication significantly strengthened the unit's professional standards and morale.
At the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Azov fighters earned worldwide recognition through the heroic 86-day defense of Mariupol. For 82 of those days, they fought alongside other units of the Mariupol garrison while completely surrounded by enemy forces. They tied down large russian forces and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. The russia lost thousands of killed and wounded in Mariupol, including senior commanders, as well as dozens of military vehicles. The heroic defense of Mariupol played a crucial role in disrupting russia's initial plans for a swift victory.

In April 2022, Azov fighters who had not been part of the Mariupol garrison formed a new detachment that fought on another sector of the front. They were later joined by numerous volunteers and Azov fighters released in prisoner exchanges.

In February 2023, the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade was established within the National Guard of Ukraine on the basis of the separate Azov detachment. The brigade demonstrated its high effectiveness in both offensive and defensive operations.

In early 2025, the Azov Special Operations Brigade became the foundation of the newly established 1st Azov Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine. At the same time, an international unit was formed within the brigade and soon expanded into a battalion. In May 2025, the Azov International Battalion entered combat for the first time, and its soldiers proved themselves to be confident and capable fighters.

In the autumn of the same year, the Azov Corps conducted a successful counteroffensive near the city of Dobropillia, liberating a significant area from russian occupation and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. During these battles, fighters of the Azov International Battalion distinguished themselves by capturing 18 russian soldiers in a single day.

Azov's commanders are experienced and highly professional officers who have spent many years fighting on the front lines of the russo-Ukrainian War. A well-trained and well-equipped soldier is their highest priority. Preserving the lives of their personnel on the battlefield remains the command's foremost objective in every operation.
